Civilianised by Essex Aero as G-AHTZ after the war, this Cierva Autogiro was actually G-ACUI which had been impressed as HM581 in 1942. It was sold to Rota Towels Ltd at Elmdon in July 1949 (a more suitably named owner could hardly be imagined!) and was active until it crashed and burnt out at Elmdon on 4.3.58.

Apart from the Jackaroo, John Wegg's collection has also provided us with a new problem. The photo of Tiger Moth EC-AHY was taken in the late sixties/early seventies at an unrecorded location. The aircraft appears to be in very good condition - note the lack of anti-spin strakes - but the problem is what is its true identity? The Editor has a note of MM30-170/EE1-170 but can anyone confirm this, suggest a c/n, location and fate for this Tiger?

Whitney Straight G-AEVL was impressed as DP855 until it was discovered that a batch of Fairey Barracudas began with the same serial. Changed to NF751, it survived the war to be registered to Capt.G.W.Harber and in 1951 was sold to New Zealand as ZK-AZX, becoming waterlogged on the journey as deck cargo it had to be broken up on arrival. Compton Paterson in the Baby Grahame-White which he was to fly in the 1911 Circuit of Britain race. Claude Grahame-White's biography records that Paterson scratched after the first day, being un-nerved by the high performance of the Baby. The same source however says that in February 1911 the pioneer was "giving exhibitions at the Southport flying school of Compton Paterson, a Liverpool entrepreneur of aviation". Since this school did not appear in the list we would be grateful for any further information which may determine whether it was a genuine training school. Perhaps it was connected with the Melly school at nearby Freshfield?
